В политической истории Украины XX столетия Петру Шелесту принадлежит особое место. Пройдя нелегкий жизненный путь, он в 1963 году стал первым секретарем ЦК Компартии Украины. Поддерживал Н. Хрущева и его политическую линию, однако оказался среди тех, кто привел к власти Л. Брежнева. Выступал за подавление Пражской весны 1968 года и в то же время блокировал тотальное удушение инакомыслия в Украине. Признавал сталинский авторитет и одновременно требовал, чтобы московское руководство придерживалось официально декларированных принципов в отношениях центра и тогдашних «союзных респуб­лик». Был против демонтажа СССР и вместе с тем содействовал укреплению украинских национальных традиций, уважительному отношению к прошлому Украины.
