Впервые, с использованием ряда неизвестных ранее документов, проведено комплексное исследование становления и развития советской военной разведки и военной контрразведки в годы Гражданской войны; впервые проанализированы организация и деятельность первого советского органа военной разведки, контрразведки и цензуры — Оперативного отдела Наркомвоена; история Курсов разведки и военного контроля, ставших первым органом по подготовке сотрудников спецслужб в России; «дело о шпионстве» одного из отцов-основателей ГРУ Георгия Теодори. На страницах книги рассматриваются: зарождение советских спецслужб и подготовка новой генерации их сотрудников, становление и развитие советских органов военной разведки и военной контрразведки. Основное внимание уделено эволюции организационной структуры и кадрового состава спецслужб.
